Agriculture is one of the most dangerous industries to work in.

Everyone who works in agriculture must have the right skills to carry out their work safely and meet their work health and safety (WHS) duties. As a PCBU, you have a duty to keep yourself, workers and your workplace safe from risks from agriculture work.

Working in agriculture

Agriculture is one of the most dangerous industries to work because of its combination of hazards, including:

  • plant, such as tractors, motorbikes and quad bikes

  • chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers

  • noise

  • dust

  • outdoor work, leading to exposure to sun and varying weather conditions, and

  • working with animals.

It often involves working alone or in remote areas, which can increase WHS risks.

To work safely, it’s important to:

  • Know your duties - a tool for working safely

This tool provides information about duties under the model WHS laws, including duties for PCBUs and workers in the agriculture industry, how to meet these duties, and hazards you may face working in agriculture.
